THEME_01

What inspired you to create HAKATAJIMA
TERRACE?

When I was a child, Hakatajima was home to some 11,000 to 12,000 people.
Salt fields stretched across the island, coastal ships came and went, and it was a lively place where playgrounds and workplaces seemed to blend into one.
Getting scolded for playing baseball in the salt fields, riding on boats with my parents on days off — those scenes are still where everything begins for me.
Today, however, the population has fallen to around 5,500, and the island's elementary, junior high, and high schools have been merged.
More and more people who work on the island now have their families live in Imabari and commute from off the island.
I felt a real sense of crisis that, at this rate, the island's industries and way of life would no longer be sustainable — and a responsibility to carry my hometown into the future.
So I joined forces with local partners — shipyards, shipping companies, banks, and other like-minded people — to develop a mixed-use facility on the site of the former town hall.
I don't believe HAKATAJIMA TERRACE alone will solve everything.
But I hope it can spark relocations and returns to the island — what we call "I-turns" and "U-turns" — and encourage people to settle here.
Our first goal is to maintain the current population, and eventually to reach 6,000.
I want this place to be one of the breakthroughs that makes that possible.

Tell us about the concept behind the facility.

The concept of HAKATAJIMA TERRACE is "the living room of this town."
We didn't want to build it just for tourists.
First and foremost, we wanted it to be a place local people use every day — a place that makes them feel glad it exists.
We envision more than half of our visitors being island residents, about 20% being people who come to the island for work at shipping companies and shipyards, 10–20% being tourists and cyclists, and the rest being families visiting home or people with ties to the island.
A bank, a post office, dining, and community spaces all connected in one place — where you run into people while running errands, and conversations start naturally.
Our ideal is a place like the living room of the whole town, where people connect gently across generations and backgrounds.
We also want visitors from outside the island to experience everyday life on Hakatajima and the warmth of its people.
Rather than rushing to perfect everything from the start, we'd like to nurture this place gradually, listening to the voices of the people who actually use it.
I believe that being a place loved by locals is, in the end, what makes it appealing to visitors from outside the island as well.

What is your vision for the future of Hakatajima?

The shipping company I run could probably operate just as well from Tokyo or Kobe.
Yet I stay on Hakatajima because my peers in the same industry are close by — sometimes we collaborate, sometimes we compete, and in doing so, we push each other to be better.
One person's challenge inspires another, and we learn even from each other's failures.
I believe that daily accumulation is what has made the island's industries strong.
If the town survives, businesses and people remain, and schools and everyday life carry on.
I don't want HAKATAJIMA TERRACE to be merely a meeting place.
I want it to support island life and become a reason for people to come home — or a starting point for new residents to settle here.
The Murakami Kaizoku, the legendary seafarers of this region, passed down teachings such as "prepare for the rise and fall of fortune," "balance cooperation with healthy rivalry," and "let the ground you stand on be your source of vitality."
For me, that "ground I stand on" is Hakatajima.
Protecting our population of 5,500 and aiming for 6,000 and beyond is a challenge even harder than the shipping business.
That is exactly why I want to work hand in hand with my fellow islanders to pass on a vibrant island to the next generation.
